Blog Post #9- Montage Research
Montage Research
I want to add a montage into my film of Lacy and Steves relationship but I don’t know what a montage is. I started researching what a montage is by looking up what it is. On the website studiobinder.com they said that a montage is a series of separate images that are edited together to create a continuous sequence. After this they talk about common film techniques, they listed 5 techniques. Music, quick cuts, voiceover narration, minimal or no dialogue, and repeated camera movement.
In my montage I wont be having music unless I add non diegetic asynchronous background music in the back of my whole project. I think quick cuts would be a good thing to add into my video because it’ll make their relationship seem exciting and add energy to it. In my whole opening scene there is voiceover narration so there is so reason to not do it in my montage and in my script I have Lacy talking. The only dialogue that would be in my montage it the voiceover narration from Lacy. I will try to add repeated camera movement to my montage but I’m not a 100% sure what it exactly is.
To learn how to make a montage I watched this video. In the video they describe a montage as the assembly of pieces of film which moved in rapid succession before the eye, create and idea. This video gives you three tips on how to make your montage better. The first tip is to not cut on beat, this is only used if you have music in the back. They say when you cut on the same part ie. every three seconds it gets boring and predictable fast. Tip number two is use matching elements, you want to create flow between you shots and make it feel natural. There should also be connection between your clips so it is able to flow naturally. The third tip is to be selective. To be selective you want to ask yourself “Do these shots add up to lead to my end goal?” When piecing you clips together make sure to put clips towards meaning so the audience isn’t confused.
In my montage my goal is to show the relationship between Lacy and Steve. All elements in the montage will all relate because they will be shots of Lacy and Steve together doing things as a couple. When I am editing I will try to piece together each clip in a way to make it feel natural and like it flows out well. To do this i will try to find a connection between the clips.
