Blog Post #4- Stereotype Research

 Stereotype Research

Stereotypes are key in making a movie because they're an easy way to distinguish a character's traits. Some Stereotypes can be bad, but stereotypes don't always have to be bad. Stereotypes can be as simple as "blondes are dumb". Most movies will try to counterstereotype a stereotype because it shows the audience that even though they have that stereotype it doesn't mean they have to follow it. For example, in the new Barbie movie, they counter the stereotype of "blondes are dumb" by having a lead that is blonde and showing that she can do anything she puts her mind to.

In my movie, I will have a few stereotypes. My main character Lacy will follow the stereotype of a shy, quiet, smart schoolgirl. Steve will follow the stereotype of a classic class clown. When Steve's other side comes out, he counterstereotypes the stereotype of a stalker. To me, a stalker typically is a quiet not known by many people reserved person and my character Steve is a popular jock who everyone knows. I have an idea to have a school scene where these stereotypes can be shown. In the school scene, it'll have Steve and Lacy in a classroom together with the rest of the students and the teacher. It will have Lacy sitting along towards the front of the class and Steve in the back with all of his friends goofing off. Then when we reach the point of the stalking it will show Steve counter-stereotyping the stereotype of a stalker by stalking Lacy.
