Blog Post #6- Lighting Research
Lighting Research
I wanted to know more about lighting so that I would feel confident on how I used it in my opening scene. I began by researching the different types of lighting that I learned from this website.
Summary of each:
Key Lighting
main light
Fill Lighting
removes dark shadowy areas
Back Lighting light from behind, separated subject from background
Side Lighting brings out textures in a shot
Practical Light use of regular light ex. lamps
Hard Lighting makes actor have an intense look, highlights their features
Soft Lighting reduces harsh shadows
High Key Create bright scene, shadowless
Low Key Utilizes shadows, good for horror/thriller movies
Motivated Lighting Imitates natural lighting
Ambient Light Light that already exists in your filming location

Film use:
For my film I could use hard lighting to highlight Lacy's facial features off distress when she starts hearing noises come from outside. I could also use practical light for scenes of Lacys and Steve inside a house together. I could use back light when showing the shadow of the stalker because I don't want the audience to know it's Steve in the opening scene but I want him to be separated from the darkness outside. I want to use motivated lighting to shine through the house to imitate moonlight and so you will still be able to see my main character in the house at night.
(Idea for back light on the shadow)
